Chapter 15

“Look at that sunset.”

“It’s amazing, for sure,” PJ says. “Big Sky Country definitely lives up to its name at sunrise and sunset. Wyoming too. Our sunsets are just as impressive. Looks like we’re going to get more rain.”

“Of course we are. Even so, I love this time of year. The long days just really . . . ” I give a shrug. “They just fill my cup.”

PJ raises his eyebrows at me. “Is that right?”

I let out a small laugh. “I had a friend who’d say that. I like it but so rarely have a chance to use the phrase. I thought you might appreciate it.”

“That I do.” He chuckles.

“I wonder how she’s doing.”

“Who’s that? Oh, your friend?”

“Yeah. Gail. We were roommates in college. She lives outside of Cheyenne. Will we ever be able to find out if our friends and loved ones survived?”

We’re camped at a park in Huntley, Montana, one of the lodging areas set up by the Army. Like in Lockwood, there was a checkpoint as we exited the interstate. Unlike Lockwood, there’s no aid station here.

We used our passes we were given before, but they were only given a cursory glance. Then we were told the rules of being in Huntley, which is essentially don’t cause trouble.

We weren’t frisked, our bags weren’t checked, and we weren’t even asked about our weapons. There’re no meals or any offer of assistance and no obvious patrols around the campground.

We arrived late afternoon and decided to stop for the day. I’ll admit, I would’ve liked to kept riding. I’m ready to be reunited with my son.

We ended up staying an additional day after Robyn was taken away by the Corpsmen. Although I was anxious to get on the road, everyone was, PJ and Rey started vomiting shortly after our talk about the trouble with Jameson. Fever and chills followed.

We thought they had food poisoning from eating something at the aid station, but they insisted they didn’t eat anything but what they’d taken with them.

PJ was sick through the night and into the early morning hours, while Rey didn’t seem to improve until afternoon. Around noon, PJ said he was well enough we could leave. But his pale face told me otherwise.

Thankfully, no one else became ill. PJ assures me he’s feeling fine after his bout with the stomach troubles, but I’m not convinced. He still looks a little peaked.

We left the house at daylight this morning. After goodbye hugs and well wishes, the rest of our group headed north, while we went east. Separating was bittersweet. The last several weeks have allowed us to grow close, almost like family.

And like family, it hasn’t always been easy.

Jameson’s misbehavior was over the top, but there have been the occasional snide or rude comments caused by being with the same people day in and day out. Donnie was often uncaring of who his words might affect. Victoria Dawson, too, but to a lesser degree. Even so, I’ve developed feelings for many of them.
